Criminal Section's Numbering System for Files

The Criminal Section has developed a system for numbering files. The system utilizes three sets of numbers: a prefix designating the type of case (50 - slavery; 175 - housing; 208 - church attacks; 144 - everything else (i.e., all police; non-housing racial cases; FACE cases); the judicial district number; and the chronological number of the file.

Example: 175-35-48

Is a housing matter from district 35 (the District of Maryland) and is the 48th file involving a housing allegation.

Example: 144-50-395

Is a non-housing matter from district 50 (the Northern District of New York), and is the 395th file.

Where the Section receives correspondence which does not allege any prosecutable violation, it is usually not assigned a specific number (called a "good number" in Criminal Section parlance) as described above. Instead, it is filed in a general correspondence file from that district (i.e., 144-50-0 or 144-50-017).
