February 23, 2011

February 23, 2011, U.S. Attorney Robert O'Neill participated in the unveiling ceremony for the Tampa Bay Area Anti-Graffiti Unit. This specialized mobile unit is the first of its kind in the state of Florida. As part of our district's Project Save Neighborhood Effort (PSN), the Tampa Bay Comprehensive Anti-Gang Initiative (CAGI) Task Force has become the hallmark for all of Florida's anti-gang efforts. PSN/CAGI is a comprehensive, collaborative, and holistic approach to dealing with guns, drugs, gangs, and violent crime. This Anti-Graffiti Unit will become yet another innovative tool used to quickly identify and remove gang markings ("tags") from public view within our communities. These markings deface and devalue public and private property, while sending negative messages to rival gangs, law enforcement and act as a recruitment tool to our children.

This ceremony was indicative of the multi-layered partnerships and tenacious commitment that continues among various agencies in the Tampa Bay Area. Twenty-six agencies make up the CAGI partnership, including Hillsborough County Code Enforcement, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, Tampa Police Department, and State Attorneys' Offices. Last year, our Tampa Bay CAGI Task Force was presented with a National Achievement Award from the United States Department of Justice for outstanding partnership work to stop violent gang activity. This year, Mr. O'Neill was on hand for the cutting of the ribbon, dedicating the vehicle to our community, and to present each of our key partners with an award for their great partnership and commitment.
