Deland Man Sentenced To More Than 12 Years On Federal Child Pornography Charges
Orlando, Florida - Chief U.S. District Judge Anne C. Conway today sentenced Orlando Ismael Muniz (58, Deland) to 12 years and 7 months in federal prison for the receipt of child pornography. As part of this sentence, he was ordered to serve a 20-year term of supervised release following his release from prison. The court also ordered Muniz to forfeit his computer equipment and register as a sex offender. Muniz pleaded guilty on April 27, 2012.
According to court documents, Muniz downloaded and collected thousands of images of child pornography using a peer-to-peer shared directory on his computer. Law enforcement officers conducted a forensic examination of Muniz’s computer and found 17,847 images and 149 movies depicting the sexual exploitation and abuse of prepubescent children.
This case was investigated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations and the Volusia County Sheriff's Office. It was prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorney Myrna Amelia Mesa.
It is another case brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Led by the United States Attorneys' Offices and the Criminal Division's Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS), Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children, and to identify and rescue victims.
