DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE MEETS WITH STUDENT COALITION FOR JUSTICE

WASHINGTON — U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Florida Gregory Robert Miller and Acting Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division Rena Comisac announced today that managing attorneys with the United States Attorneys Office, Special Litigation counsel for the Civil Rights Division, and the Regional Director of the Community Relations Service of the U.S. Department of Justice met today in Tallahassee with representatives of the Student Coalition for Justice. The meeting was held at the request of the Student Coalition which had voiced concerns about the recent acquittal of eight boot camp employees on state criminal charges arising from the death of 14 year old Martin Anderson following his collapse at a Bay County, Fla., boot camp for juvenile offenders on January 5, 2006. The Civil Rights Division and the U.S. Attorney’s Office are reviewing evidence concerning the case. At the meeting, attorneys for the government gave a presentation on the federal law governing the prosecution of civil rights violations. Students had the opportunity to voice their concerns and ask questions about the federal review. This is an on-going criminal investigation; therefore, the Department can make no further comment on this case at this time.
