FIRST ASSISTANT U.S. ATTORNEY BECOMES ACTING U.S. ATTORNEY

Jeffrey Sloman, First Assistant to former United States Attorney R. Alexander Acosta, has been appointed Acting U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, effective June 6, 2009. Sloman, 50, began his career with the U.S. Attorney's Office in 1990.

Sloman was named First Assistant U.S. Attorney (FAUSA) in October 2006. As FAUSA, he supervised more than 284 attorneys and staff in the civil, criminal, appellate, and administrative divisions, and served as the Office's liaison with the Department of Justice, law enforcement agencies, the defense bar, and the judiciary. Prior to his selection as FAUSA, Sloman was the Chief of the Criminal Division since 2004, and was responsible for reviewing most aspects of all criminal litigation throughout the District. Sloman spent his first thirteen years in Fort Lauderdale as a line AUSA, a deputy chief and then as Deputy Chief (Chief) of the Fort Lauderdale branch office.

In 2003, Sloman received the Director's Award, one of the Department of Justice's highest honors, for his work in one of the first post-9/11 terrorism trials against individuals seeking to conduct an Islamic holy war or "jihad" by using explosives to destroy a National Guard armory, several Florida Power & Light electrical substations, and other South Florida targets. Sloman also received the Director's Award in 1997 for his work on complex health care fraud prosecution.

Born and raised in Miami, Sloman is a graduate of the University of Florida and the University of Miami School of Law. From July 1984 to September 1990, Sloman worked at the law firms of Kimbrell and Hamann, P.A., and Stuzin & Camner, P.A., where he specialized in complex commercial and products liability litigation.
