MIAMI MAN SENTENCED IN FRAUD SCHEME AGAINST MIAMI-DADE PUBLIC SCHOOLS EMPLOYEES

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 21, 2010

Wifredo A. Ferrer, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, Henry Gutierrez, Postal Inspector in Charge, U.S. Postal Inspection Service, and Rafael P. Hernandez, Jr., Chief, North Miami Beach Police Department, announced the June 18 sentencing of defendant Jeffrey Jerome Jordan, 25, of Miami, for his participation in a scheme to defraud employees of the Miami-Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS). U.S. District Judge Donald L. Graham sentenced Jordan to 28 months’ imprisonment, to be followed by three years of supervised released. In addition, Jordan was ordered to pay more than $12,000 in restitution. Jordan had pled guilty on April 1, 2010, to one count of credit card fraud and one count of aggravated identity theft, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Sections 1029(a)(2) and 1028A(a)(1), in connection with the scheme.

According to statements made and documents filed during the plea hearing, between July 2008 and December 2008, Jordan obtained the identities of MDCPS employees through his girlfriend, Roshell Demps, who was then working in the MDCPS Risk/Benefits Management Office. Demps used her access to MDCPS records to obtain personal identifying information of other current and former MDCPS employees. Jordan and Demps then used the personal identifying information, including names, birth dates, and Social Security numbers, to fraudulently acquire credit cards under some of the employees’ names. The fraudulently acquired cards were then used to make various purchases, resulting in more than $12,000 in losses. Demps pled guilty to similar charges in connection with the scheme and was sentenced to 30 months’ imprisonment on December 15, 2009.

Mr. Ferrer commended the Identity Theft and Economic Crimes Task Force, particularly the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the North Miami Beach Police Department, for its work on this case. Mr. Ferrer also thanked the Miami-Dade Schools Police Department for its continued cooperation in the investigation of this matter. This case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jared Strauss.
