HOLY CROSS HOSPITAL IDENTITY THEFT RING MEMBERS PLEAD GUILTY AND ARE SENTENCED
Wifredo A. Ferrer, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, and Henry Gutierrez, Special Agent in Charge, United States Postal Inspection Service, announced the sentencing of Mildred Alexis, 43, of Miami, following her previous plea of guilty to charges of wrongful disclosure of individually identifiable health information. On May 25, 2011, Alexis was sentenced to 40 months in prison, to be followed by 3 years of supervised release.
According to statements made during the guilty plea, Alexis approached co-defendant Natasha Orr, an employee at Holy Cross Hospital (HCH), and requested that Orr steal patient information from the emergency room records at HCH, in Fort Lauderdale. Alexis also recruited Raushanah Bowleg, who worked for a doctor in Aventura, Florida, to steal similar patient information from her employer. Alexis then sold the stolen patient information obtained from Orr and Bowleg to other co-conspirators who used the patients’ stolen information to fraudulently obtain bank account information and then obtain debit cards in the patients’ names. Alexis shared a portion of proceeds from the sale of the stolen information names with Orr and Bowleg.
On April 15, 2010, co-defendant Orr was sentenced to 24 months in prison, to be followed by 3 years of supervised. On May 27, 2011, defendant Raushanah Bowleg, 30 of Miami, pled guilty to wrongful disclosure of individually identifiable health information. Sentencing is scheduled for August 15, 2011 before U.S. District Court Judge Donald Middlebrooks in West Palm Beach, FL.
Defendant Jimmy Lee Theodore, 27, of Miami, is scheduled to be sentenced on June 20, 2011, at 11:00 AM. Defendant Albert Andrulonis, 27 of Davie, is scheduled to be sentenced on June 7, 2011 at 1:30 PM.
