Assistant U.S. Attorney Juan Antonio Gonzalez and Legal Assistant Wanda Hubbard of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida were one of 163 members of the Department of Justice recognized by Attorney General Eric Holder and Executive Office for U.S. Attorneys (EOUSA) Director H. Marshall Jarrett at the 28th annual Director’s Awards Ceremony Friday in Washington D.C.

The Southern District of Florida was one of the districts represented at the ceremony, which was held in the Great Hall at the Robert F. Kennedy Department of Justice Building.

In his prepared remarks, Attorney General Holder told the awardees that they, “represent the very best that this Department has to offer” and that their “work embodies our ongoing commitment – not merely to win cases, but to do justice; to protect our fellow citizens; to empower the most vulnerable among us; and to uphold the rule of law.”

“Each day the members of the US Attorneys’ community go to work for the citizens of this country with one goal in mind – to do everything they can to protect the rights of all Americans,” said EOUSA Director Jarrett. “I am continually humbled by their resiliency, dedication, and unparalleled work ethic to accomplish this noble mission. Today’s awardees exemplify what it truly means to be a patriot and it is an honor to recognize them for their extraordinary service.”

They will received the award for their work in “Operation Two-Trip Pick Up,” a two-year, OCDETF Title III investigation targeting a conspiracy that used the Venezuelan Black Market Bolivar Exchange to launder millions of dollars in drug proceeds. The investigative team included AUSA Gonzalez, Ms. Hubbard, and special agents from the Department of Homeland Security, and a forensic accountant from the Monroe County Sheriff's Office. This team secured the convictions of 18 defendants, seized $1 million in drug proceeds, and obtained a $7 million forfeiture.

U.S. Attorney Wifredo Ferrer stated, “This awards confirms that which I already know – that the attorneys and staff of the U.S. Attorney’s Office are of the highest caliber in the nation. I am proud that the Department has recognized AUSA Gonzalez and Ms. Hubbard for this well-deserved award. Their dedication, hard work and commitment to the cause of justice make them worthy recipients of this great honor.”
