Bank Robber Sentenced to Federal Prison
MACON: Maxwell Wood, United States Attorney announced that Carey Gilbert Chappell was sentenced today before the Honorable C. Ashley Royal, United States District Judge for the Middle District of Georgia. Chappell was sentenced to 210 months (17 ½ years) without the possibility of parole followed by three years of supervised release.
On October 17, 2007, Chappell was convicted after a three day jury trial of one count of bank robbery in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 2113.
During the trial, evidence established that on August 14, 2006, Chappell entered the SunTrust Bank located on Gray Highway, Macon, Georgia shouting for help. Chappell then leapt over the teller counter and stole approximately $7980.00. Chappell fled the bank on a bicycle. Police officers arrived and canvassed the adjoining neighborhood and developed several leads. Based on the leads, Chappell was later arrested at a local motel in West Macon. During the investigation, law enforcement officials identified several witnesses who were able to testify that Chappell admitted to robbing the bank and spending the proceeds on several personal items including the purchase of an automobile.
Wood stated: “This lengthy prison sentence sends a message to those who might consider committing a violent crime that upon conviction of a violent federal crime they will do hard time. Bank robbery demands severe consequences.”
The case was investigated by the Macon Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Michael Solis.
