HAWAII RESIDENT SENTENCED TO PRISON
FOR FAILING TO PAY CALIFORNIA CHILD SUPPORT
HONOLULU, HAWAII - Kenneth Firestone, a Hawaii resident, was sentenced today by United States District Judge David A. Ezra to 12 months and a day in prison followed by a three-year term of supervised release for failing to pay child support to three children from a former marriage. He was also ordered to pay $209,434.01 in restitution for the missed child support payments to the three children and will also pay missed child support payments to another child from a separate former marriage as part of his term of supervised release. Both child support orders were issued by courts in California.
Edward H. Kubo, Jr., United States Attorney for the District of Hawaii, said that in pronouncing sentence today the court noted that the failure to make child support payments had stretched out over a period of nearly ten years, and that Firestone had moved from California, where the order was initially entered, to Hawaii, thereby delaying the enforcement of any support obligation. Glenn R. Ferry, Special Agent in Charge of the Los Angeles Region of the Office of Inspector General for the Department of Health and Human Services, the agency which investigated the case, said "the investigation and prosecution of noncustodial parents who fail to pay court-ordered child support are priorities of our office. We will continue working closely with our federal and state partners in aggressively pursuing parents like Kenneth Firestone. " The prosecution was handled by Assistant United States Attorney Leslie E. Osborne, Jr.
