Former Coralville Man Sentenced On Federal Gun Charges

DAVENPORT- IA, On March 3, 2008, Damian Lamont Johnson, age 28, formerly of Coralville, Iowa was sentenced by United States District Court Judge John A. Jarvey to 30 months in federal prison and ordered to pay an assessment of $100 to the Crime Victim Fund, announced United States Attorney Matthew G. Whitaker. There is no parole in the federal system. After release from prison, Johnson will be subject to three years of supervised release.


Johnson was sentenced after pleading guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm.


On November 8, 2006, Johnson was under probation supervision by the Iowa Department of Corrections, when a Department of Corrections officer and a Coralville Police Department officer conducted a search of his Coralville apartment. In a locked container inside his apartment, officers found a .32 caliber semi-automatic handgun. A key provided by Johnson opened the locked container. Officers also found marijuana, a scale and other items in the safe. Johnson had prior felony convictions out of Cook County Illinois for possession of a stolen vehicle and possession/delivery of a controlled substance.


This case was prosecuted in the United States Attorney’s Office in the Southern District of Iowa pursuant to the Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative. This investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Coralville Police Department, and the Iowa Sixth Judicial District Department of Corrections.
