Russell Man Sentenced on Firearm Possession Charges
Des Moines, IA - On March 14, 2008, Anthony James Brown Thomas, 37, of Russell, Iowa, was sentenced to a term of imprisonment of forty-two months for possession of a firearm following a prior felony conviction, announced United States Attorney Matthew G. Whitaker. On March 16, 2007, Mr. Thomas was found in possession of several firearms and related ammunition following a search of his residence. In addition to the term of imprisonment, United States Senior District Court Judge Ronald E. Longstaff sentenced Thomas to serve a three-year period of supervised release following his incarceration, as well as being ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Crime Victim Fund.
On November 19, 2007, Anthony James Brown Thomas entered a plea of guilty to one count of being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm. Mr. Thomas was a person prohibited from possessing a firearm due to a prior felony conviction.
This case was investigated by the Chariton Police Department, Lucas County Sheriff’s Office, Centerville Police Department/Southeast Iowa Drug Task Force, United States Secret Service and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. This case was prosecuted in the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa.
