Iowa City Man Sentenced to 34 Months Imprisonment for Fraudulent Documents and Identity Theft
Davenport, IA- On April 28, 2008, Juan Camacho-Moran, age 31 of Iowa City, was sentenced to 34 months imprisonment, having previously been convicted of one count of fraud and misuse of immigration documents, misuse of a social security number, and aggravated identity theft, announced United States Attorney Matthew G. Whitaker. United States District Judge John A. Jarvey also ordered that Camacho-Moran serve his sentence consecutively to a 5-year sentence of imprisonment in the Iowa Department of Corrections currently being served by Camacho-Moran based on his sixth conviction for OWI. Additionally, Judge Jarvey ordered that Camacho-Moran be deported to Mexico following completion of his prison sentences and to pay an assessment of $100 to the Crime Victim Fund.
In March 2006, Camacho-Moran, a Mexican national illegally in the United States, secured employment with John Roffman Construction, Inc., in Iowa City. In September 2006, Camacho-Moran was arrested for OWI in Muscatine County. While in custody on that charge, Muscatine County authorities notified the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement that Camacho-Moran apparently was in the United States illegally. ICE agents subsequently determined that the Camacho-Moran, using a number of bogus names and identifications, had lived illegally in the United States since about 1999, primarily in Iowa, Illinois, and Indiana. During that time, Camacho-Moran was repeatedly arrested and convicted of OWI as well as crimes involving domestic violence and drugs.
ICE Agents determined that the identification used by the defendant to secure employment with John Roffman Construction was bogus. In particular, the defendant had used a bogus alien registration card (green card) with a real registration number previously issued to a legal Mexican immigrant.
This case was prosecuted by the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Iowa and investigated by the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Department of Homeland Security.
