Former Burlington Resident Sentenced on Federal Gun and Drug Charges

Davenport, IA- On July 1, 2009, Jason Dean Atkinson, 26, formerly of Burlington, IA, was sentenced to 63 months’ imprisonment for one count of conspiracy to knowingly manufacture and distribute at least 50 grams of a mixture and substance containing a detectable amount of methamphetamine, announced United States Attorney Matthew G. Whitaker. Atkinson was also sentenced to 60 months’ imprisonment for one count of possession of a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking, with that sentence to be consecutive to the other, for a total imprisonment of 123 months. United States District Judge John A. Jarvey ordered that Atkinson will serve a term of 4 years of supervised release following his incarceration and pay an assessment of $200 to Crime Victims Fund. In addition, the Court ordered Atkinson to pay $4,969.00 in restitution to the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement to reimburse them for clean-up expenses related to the offense.

The charges stemmed from a traffic stop of a vehicle containing various items associated with the manufacture of methamphetamine. Atkinson was one of three individuals in the vehicle. He was in possession of a Bohmische Waffenfabrik (German made) .32 caliber handgun. During the search of the vehicle a Louisa County Deputy Sheriff was exposed to chemicals related to methamphetamine manufacturing. That exposure resulted in ongoing health problems for the deputy.

This investigation was conducted by the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement and the Louisa County Sheriff’s Office.
