Blue Grass Woman Sentenced on Federal Theft Charges

Davenport, IA- On July 2, 2009, Beverly Kaye Allers, 45, of Blue Grass, IA, was sentenced to 2 years probation with a condition that she serve 6 months home confinement on electronic monitoring for one count of Theft of Funds of the United States, announced United States Attorney Matthew G. Whitaker. United States District Judge John A. Jarvey also ordered that Allers pay $100 to the Crime Victim Fund.

The Black Lung Reform Act provides benefits to coal miners disabled by the disease as well as their dependent survivors. It is administered by the Department of Labor. From March, 2000 until December, 2005, Allers received Black Lung program funds to which she was not entitled. The total amount illegally received was $36,783.40. The funds were meant for Allers’ mother who died in 2000. Allers made false statements on various forms required by the Department of Labor during the time period noted in the Indictment while she continued to receive benefits intended for her deceased mother.
