DES MOINES MAN SENTENCED ON CHILD PORNOGRAPHY CHARGES

DES MOINES - On August 13, 2009, Arin Christopher Murphy, age 21, of Des Moines, Iowa, was sentenced to a term of 108 months imprisonment for receiving child pornography, announced United States Attorney Matthew G. Whitaker. United States District Court Judge James E. Gritzner also ordered Murphy to serve a ten year term of supervised release upon his release from prison and pay an assessment of $100 to the Crime Victim Fund.

On April 3, 2009, Murphy pled guilty to the receiving child pornography charge. The case arose out of an undercover investigation of individuals using Peer to Peer (P2P) file sharing software to trade child pornography. A search warrant was executed at Murphy’s residence on December 14, 2007 and his computer was seized. A forensic exam of Murphy’s computer revealed that Murphy had downloaded approximately 30 videos and 130 images of child pornography from the internet.

This case was prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa.This case was investigated by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice. Led by United States Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division's Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS), Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state and local resources to better locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims.
