DAVENPORT BROTHERS SENTENCED TO LIFE IN PRISON ON FEDERAL DRUG CHARGES
DAVENPORT- On September 15, 2009, Douglas Marcel Meeks, age 24 and Lloyd D. Meeks, age 35, both formerly of Davenport, were both sentenced to mandatory life imprisonment by United States District Court Judge John A. Jarvey, announced United States Attorney Matthew G. Whitaker. On May 13, 2009, a jury found both Douglas Meeks and Lloyd Meeks guilty of conspiracy to distribute cocaine base from April 2008 to June 2008. Additionally, the jury returned a guilty verdict against Douglas Meeks for distribution of crack cocaine on April 8, 2008, and Lloyd Meeks guilty of distribution of crack cocaine on June 23, 2008. There is no parole in the federal system.
The evidence at trial described an April 8, 2008, controlled purchase of one ounce of crack cocaine from Douglas Meeks in the parking lot of a Davenport business. The evidence also described an June 23, 2008, controlled purchase of one ounce of crack cocaine from Lloyd Meeks in a vehicle outside a Davenport apartment complex. Witnesses also described both Lloyd and Douglas Meeks distributing crack cocaine on a regular basis from a Davenport apartment and in the Castlewood Apartment Complex area in Davenport.
Both Douglas and Lloyd Meeks had two prior convictions for felony drug offenses which under federal law mandated a life sentence. This case was prosecuted in the United States Attorney’s Office in the Southern District of Iowa.
This investigation was conducted by the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Iowa Department of Public Safety, Division of Narcotics Enforcement, and the Davenport Police Department.
