Civil Division

Civil Division

The Civil Division represents the United States, its agencies and where appropriate its employees whenever they are sued. These suits typically involve employment disputes, medical malpractice, wrongful death, auto accidents, other tort actions, judicial review of administrative decisions, social security appeals, Freedom of Information Act and Privacy Act cases, immigration cases and cases challenging federal statutes and regulatory schemes.

The Civil Division also files lawsuits on behalf of the United States to recover money lost due to fraud, negligence and other misconduct against the government, to impose civil penalties for violations of the nation's health, safety and environmental laws, to condemn property and to enforce Civil Rights laws, including the Fair Housing Act.

The Civil Division represents the United States in bankruptcy proceedings, mortgage foreclosures, in actions affecting property on which the federal government has a lien, and collects defaulted federal loans, criminal fines and any money due the United States as a result of judgments in favor of the federal government.
