ALBION ATTORNEY SENTENCED TO PRISON FOR FILING FALSE INCOME TAX RETURNS

A. Courtney Cox, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois, announced today that on May 20, 2009, MORRIS J. NEAD, age 40, an attorney at law practicing in Albion, Illinois, and former Public Defender for Wabash County, Illinois was sentenced to 366 days in federal prison as a result of his conviction of the criminal tax charge of making and subscribing a false 2003 federal income tax return with the Internal Revenue Service. NEAD admitted that he filed false income tax returns for 2003, 2004, and 2005 which failed to report income of approximately $204,531.00. NEAD was also ordered to serve one year of supervised release following his release from prison and was ordered to pay restitution to the Internal Revenue Service in the amount of $56,602 and to cooperate with the Internal Revenue Service in filing all returns and paying all taxes as required.

The case was investigated by the Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Norman Smith.
