BETHALTO POSTAL EMPLOYEE SENTENCED FOR THEFT OF MAIL

A. Courtney Cox, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois, announced today that on May 28, 2009, BARBARA A. DAVIS, age 42, of Bethalto, Illinois, was sentenced in United States District Court to a term of 3 months’ imprisonment with a recommendation for placement in community confinement, to be followed by three years of supervised release following her conviction for five counts of Theft of Mail by a Postal Employee. DAVIS was also ordered to pay a fine of $160, a special assessment of $500, restitution of $210, and costs of the investigation in the amount of $115. DAVIS had previously pled guilty to the offenses on December 22, 2008.

The offenses for which DAVIS was convicted occurred in June and July of 2008, and involved thefts of gift cards which were contained various parcels of mail which had been entrusted to DAVIS for delivery on her assigned carrier route in Bethalto, Illinois.

Evidence in support of this prosecution was obtained during an investigation by the Inspector General of the United States Postal Service. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney James E. Crowe, III.
