FEDERAL BANK ROBBERY CHARGE FILED
A. Courtney Cox, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois, announced today that on September 9, 2009, FREDERICK G. GOOSBY, age 36, of Marion, Illinois, was indicted by a federal grand jury sitting in Benton, Illinois, in a one-count indictment, charging him with bank robbery. The violation took place on August 3, 2009, in Murphysboro, Illinois. An indictment is a formal charge against a defendant. Under the law, a defendant is presumed to be innocent of a charge until proved guilty beyond a reasonable doubt to the satisfaction of a jury.
The offense carries a penalty of up to 20 years’ imprisonment, a fine of up to $250,000, and a term of 5 years’ supervised release.
The investigation was conducted by the Murphysboro Police Department, Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, and the Illinois State Police Crime Lab, in cooperation with other area local law enforcement agencies and Jackson County States Attorney Michael Wepsiec. The investigation was conducted as part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods DRAGUN Team Initiative, a cooperative effort of local, state, and federal law enforcement, and state and federal prosecuting authorities, aimed at ridding communities of illegal drugs and guns.
The case is assigned to Assistant United States Attorney Amanda A. Robertson for prosecution.
