Hammond, Indiana—The United States Attorney's Office announced:


Mellina Land, 41, of Griffith, Indiana, was sentenced on 4/29/10 before Judge Joseph Van Bokkelen to 20 months imprisonment and 2 years of supervised release after pleading guilty to 4 counts of wire fraud and 1 count of identity theft. Between January 2005 and continuing through July 2008, the defendant operated as a travel agent and the owner and operator of U Send Me Vacations, purported to provide travel services, and I WILL SERVICES, purported to process credit card payments for the defendant’s businesses. The defendant represented herself to be a an Independent Travel Agent, doing business as U Send Me Vacations, wherein she solicited individuals, through the United States mail, telephonically, and through electronic mail by claiming to make and schedule travel arrangements for individuals upon payment. The defendant defrauded 14 individuals including a couple planning their wedding out of the country, several families planning trips, a group of individuals who the defendant directed to get yellow fever vaccinations for their trip, and 67 year old victim whose identity she stole and obtained two (2) credit cards in order to continue to fund her business and for other personal purchases. This case was investigated by the United States Postal Inspection Service, and was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Toi Houston.
