LAWRENCE MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO WIRE FRAUD

KANSAS CITY, KAN. – Robert Ryan Sayler, 32, a former Lawrence police officer, has pleaded guilty to 14 counts of wire fraud, U.S. Attorney Lanny Welch said today.

Sayler was indicted June 16, 2009. According to the indictment, from May through December 2008 Sayler made purchases of video games from Target stores, removed the individual video game discs from the original packaging, and returned the empty boxes to Target stores for complete refunds. Then he sold the stolen video games on eBay. The stolen games included Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09, Soul Caliber IV and Battlefield Bad Company. Sayler sold multiple copies of each of those games on eBay at prices ranging from $30 to $46 each.

Sentencing is set for Nov. 2, 2009. He faces a maximum penalty of 20 years and a fine up to $250,000 on each count. Welch commended the U.S. Secret Service and Assistant U.S. Attorney Chris Oakley for their work on the case.
