TWO POUNDS OF METH ON I-70 SEND MAN TO FEDERAL PRISON

KANSAS CITY, KAN. – Ramon Manuel Romero-Gomez, 19, has been sentenced to 135 months in federal prison for drug trafficking, U.S. Attorney Lanny Welch said today.

In May 2009, Romero-Gomez pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine. In his plea, he admitted that when he was arrested March 20, 2009, he had two pounds of methamphetamine in his possession. Romero-Gomez was driving a 1999 Black Dodge pickup with Nevada plates when the Kansas Highway Patrol pulled him over on I-70 in Ellsworth County for a traffic violation. He was placed under arrest for driving on a suspended license. A search of his vehicle turned up two pounds of methamphetamine in plastic-wrapped bundles hidden in the gas tank.

Other defendants in the case include:
Juan Mata-Soto, who is set for sentencing Nov. 17, 2009.
Martin Arrendondo-Valenzuela, who is set for sentencing Nov. 10, 2009.
Jose Morales-Ruiz, who is set for sentencing Nov. 17, 2009.
Jose Lopez-Lugo, who is set for sentencing Aug. 27, 2009.
Azucena Alvarado-Martinez, who is set for trial Oct. 13, 2009.
Omar Castro-Bojorquez, who is set for sentencing Sept. 29, 2009.
Francisco Perea, who is set for jury trial Oct. 13, 2009.

Welch commended the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Kansas Highway Patrol, Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Assistant U.S. Attorney Sheri McCracken for their work on the case.
