DRIVER WITH 16-KILO LOAD GETS 10 YEARS IN FEDERAL PRISON

TOPEKA , KAN. – Alonso Ayon Corrales, 36, Modesto, Calif., has been sentenced to 120 months in federal prison for drug trafficking, U.S. Attorney Lanny Welch said today.

In May 2009, federal jury in Topeka found Corrales guilty of one count of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute cocaine and one count of possession with intent to distribute cocaine. During a trial that began April 29, prosecutors presented evidence that Corrales was arrested July 20, 2005, on I-70 in Russell County, Kan. A Russell County Sheriff’s Office deputy pulled over a 2000 Honda Accord traveling westbound on I-70 near milepost 194. A search of the vehicle turned up more than 16 kilograms (35 pounds) of powder cocaine. The drugs were found in 20 packages in a hidden compartment under the windshield wipers.

Welch commended the Russell County Sheriff’s Office, the Drug Enforcement Administration and Assistant U.S. Attorney Greg Hough for their work on the case.
