MAN GETS FEDERAL PRISON TERM FOR 2005 ARMED ROBBERY AT TOPEKA BAR
TOPEKA, KAN. – Joseph Lee Allen, 45, Topeka, Kan., has been sentenced to 7 years in federal prison for brandishing a firearm during an armed robbery at a Topeka bar, U.S. Attorney Lanny Welch said today.
In April 2009, Allen pleaded guilty to participating in a robbery Dec. 18, 2005, at Scottie’s, a bar and grill at 901 S.W. Fairlawn in Topeka. In his plea, Allen admitted he robbed Scottie’s along with his brother, Kenneth Eugene Allen, Jr., who wielded a black revolver during the crime. They threatened the bartender, took money from the cash register and fled. Joseph Lee Allen admitted he was present at the bar, knew his brother was going to rob the bar, drove the getaway car and shared in the proceeds of the robbery.
The federal sentence is to be served consecutively to a 586-month sentence Allen is serving for a conviction in Shawnee County District Court on a charge of attempted murder in another case. Welch commended the Topeka Police Department and Assistant U.S. Attorney Greg Hough for their work on this case.
