TRAFFIC STOP IN LYON COUNTY LEADS TO 4 KILOGRAMS OF COCAINE, 5-YEAR SENTENCE

TOPEKA, KAN. – Derrick Lynn Moore, 42, Ducanville, Texas, was sentenced Tuesday to 5 years in federal prison for drug trafficking.

Moore pleaded guilty in January to one count of possession with intent to distribute approximately 4 kilograms (8.8 pounds) of cocaine. In his plea, he admitted that he had 4 kilograms of cocaine concealed in his vehicle when a Kansas Highway Patrol officer pulled him over on June 15, 2007, on I-35 in Lyon County.

Moore claimed to be going to Kansas City to pick up a car his aunt had purchased on eBay. But Moore didn’t any paperwork. He seemed nervous and he couldn’t tell the trooper exactly where he was going in Kansas City. The drugs were found in an auxiliary fuel tank that had been modified with a hidden compartment.

Melgren commended the Kansas Highway Patrol and Assistant U.S. Attorney Greg Hough for their work on the case.
