OBERLIN MAN SENTENCED TO MORE THAN 12 YEARS ON METHAMPHETAMINE CHARGE

WICHITA, KAN. – Darrel Lee Ferguson, 53, Oberlin, Kan., has been sentenced to 150 months for trafficking in methamphetamine, U.S. Attorney Lanny Welch said today.

In March, Ferguson pleaded guilty to one count of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. In his plea, he admitted he possessed approximately 120 grams of methamphetamine when he was arrested Nov. 1, 2008, at his home in Oberlin.

According to court documents, in October 2008, investigators arranged for a confidential informant to buy methamphetamine from Ferguson. On Nov. 1, 2008, a team of law enforcement officers including the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, the Oberlin Police Department, the Decatur County Sheriff’s Office and the Thomas County Sheriff Department served a search warrant at Ferguson’s home in the 200 block of North Wilson in Oberlin. They arrested Ferguson and seized a black fanny pack containing methamphetamine that he wore around his neck. A search of the house turned up more methamphetamine, four firearms, and two homemade bombs.

Co-defendant Kevin Lane Smith, 35, Oberlin, Kan., was arrested outside the house. He pleaded guilty and is set for sentencing June 10, 2009.

Welch commended the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, the Oberlin Police Department, the Decatur County Sheriff’s Office, the Kansas State Fire Marshal, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and Assistant U.S. Attorney Matt Treaster for their work on the case.
