JURY VERDICT: CALIFORNIA MAN GUILTY ON 16-KILOGRAM COCAINE CHARGE
TOPEKA, KAN. – Alonso Ayon Corrales, 35, Modesto, Calif., has been convicted on federal drug trafficking charges, U.S. Attorney Lanny Welch said today.
A federal jury in Topeka found Corrales guilty of one count of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute cocaine and one count of possession with intent to distribute cocaine. During a trial that began April 29, prosecutors presented evidence that Corrales was arrested July 20, 2005, on I-70 in Russell County, Kan.
A Russell County Sheriff’s Office deputy pulled over a 2000 Honda Accord traveling westbound on I-70 near milepost 194. A search of the vehicle turned up more than 16 kilograms (35 pounds) of powder cocaine. The drugs were found in 20 packages in a hidden compartment under the windshield wipers.
Sentencing is set for Aug. 5, 2009. He faces a penalty of not less than 10 years and not more than life on each count.
Co-defendants in the case are:
– Ricardo Padilla-Aramburo, who pleaded guilty and is awaiting sentencing.
– Heriberto Rodriguez Anzaldo, who is a fugitive.
Welch commended the Russell County Sheriff’s Office, the Drug Enforcement Administration and Assistant U.S. Attorney Greg Hough for their work on the case.
