FORMER LAWRENCE POLICE OFFICER SENTENCED TO PROBATION FOR WIRE FRAUD

WICHITA, KAN. – Robert Ryan Sayler, 32, a former Lawrence police officer, has been sentenced to two years probation for wire fraud, U.S. Attorney Lanny Welch said today.

Sayler pleaded guilty to 14 counts of wire fraud. In his plea, he admitted he devised a scheme to defraud Target retail stores by purchasing video games, removing the video game disks and returning the games for cash. He removed the video disks from the packaging so that the package appeared to be unopened. Using a computer, he placed the stolen video games for sale on eBay.

The merchandise he stole and sold on eBay included six disks of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09, four disks of Soul Caliber IV, and four disks of Battlefield Bad Company.

Welch commended the U.S. Secret Service and Assistant U.S. Attorney Chris Oakley for their work on the case.
