FORMER FOOTBALL COACH SENTENCED
IN CHILD PORNOGRAPHY CASE
KANSAS CITY, KAN, – A former college football coach was sentenced Monday to 13 years in federal prison for trafficking in child pornography.
Scott Frear, 43, Leavenworth, Kan., formerly a coach at the University of St. Mary in Leavenworth, Kan., was sentenced during a hearing before U.S. District Judge Kathryn H. Vratil.
“Mr. Frear is an Internet predator,” said U.S. Attorney Eric Melgren. “He successfully used the Internet to search out and sexually molest young boys. He collected child pornography, and in his employment as a coach he placed himself in an environment where he would have access to young boys.”
Frear pleaded guilty in June to one count of trafficking in child pornography. In his plea, Frear admitted he corresponded during July 2005 with a person whose screen name was “bradnh14" in the chat room of a group hosted by Yahoo.com that caters to adults interested in sex with or between male children. A police detective in New Hampshire who was posing as “bradnh14" had posted a profile with a photo of himself when he was 13 or 14 years old. During the conversation over the Internet, “bradnh14" told Frear he was 14 and a resident New Hampshire. Frear replied that he was 28 years old, a teacher and a resident of Kansas. Frear used a Web camera to send images of his erect penis and images of himself masturbating to “bradnh14.” He also sent short video clips of nude adolescent males having sexual intercourse.
Melgren commended Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Assistant U.S. Attorney Kim Martin for their work on the case.
