December 19, 2007

LONDON, Ky.Tammy Brewer, 43, secretary to Knott County Judge Executive Randall Thompson, was indicted today by a federal grand jury on charges that she committed perjury during the grand jury’s investigation into alleged misappropriation of funds by Knott County officials. This same grand jury previously charged four individuals in a scheme allegedly involving the distribution of county travel, blacktop and bridges to private citizens in an attempt to influence the outcome of the November 2006 general election. According to the Indictment, Brewer’s allegedly false testimony to the grand jury involves her statements that she and her father paid for blacktop placed on their property and that a receipt she provided investigators was genuine.

Amul R. Thapar, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky, and Tracy A. Reinhold, Special Agent in Charge, Federal Bureau of Investigation, jointly made the announcement today after a federal grand jury in London, Kentucky, returned the Indictment.

The investigation preceding the Indictment was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The Indictment was presented to the grand jury by Assistant United States Attorney Kenneth R. Taylor.

However, any sentence following conviction would be imposed by the court after consideration of the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and the federal statute governing the imposition of a sentence.
