MAYOR ANNOUNCES NEW GRANT TO CURB YOUTH GANGS
– Project targets California, Beecher Terrace neighborhoods
LOUISVILLE, KY - United States Attorney David L. Huber, who was in attendance at Mayor Jerry Abramson’s announcement of a new federal grant to assist the City of Louisville in curbing youth gangs, said today, “It’s time to take a different approach to youth gangs and youth violence.” He also said, “We are pleased to have assisted the City in the possible prevention of crime rather than our usual role of prosecution. Now we’re looking at the other side – preventing youths from joining a gang in the first place, which could prevent crime down the road.”
Huber also noted his office’s close relationship with the Louisville Metro Police Department in prosecuting federal gun and drug violations that lead to violence. “Approximately 30% of our federal cases district-wide are generated by local police and sheriffs and a large part of those are with LMPD,” Huber noted.
