– Couple stole mail, "washed" checks, and used counterfeit IDs to obtain cash and goods
LOUISVILLE, KY - A Superseding Information was filed by the United States Attorney charging Leilani Kauka, age 31, of Louisville, Kentucky, and Daniel Redmon, age 31, of Louisville, Kentucky, with Conspiracy to Commit Bank Fraud, Bank Fraud, Aggravated Identity Theft, and Mail Theft, U.S. Attorney David L. Huber of the Western District of Kentucky announced today.
The Information alleges that Kauka and Redmon, along with others, between April 2004 and September 2006, conspired to commit bank fraud in and around Louisville, Kentucky, by making counterfeit and forged checks and presenting them to Kentucky banks and businesses, including CompUSA and Circuit City in Louisville, Kentucky, and Wal-mart in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, in return for money and merchandise. In so doing, Kauka and Redmon defrauded J.P. Morgan Chase Bank, a federally insured financial institution. In addition, the Information alleges Kauka and Redmon committed aggravated identity theft by obtaining the name, address, birthday, and driver’s license number of two individuals. Finally, the Information charges Kauka and Redmon with stealing mail not addressed to them from mail boxes in Oldham and Jefferson Counties.
In the event that Redmon is convicted, the minimum potential penalty is 2 years imprisonment and the maximum potential penalty is 69 years imprisonment, a $2,750,000 fine, and supervised release for a period of 18 years.
The same penalties apply to Kauka, who plead guilty to the charges contained in the Superseding Information on April 30, 2008. She admitted the above facts, as well as to using a counterfeit check in the name of R.G. on March 28, 2006, at Circuit City on Shelbyville Road, Louisville, Kentucky, to purchase an HP Pavillion DV5000 laptop and a Linksys Wireless G-range expander.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Ann Claire Phillips, and it was investigated by the United States Secret Service and Louisville Metropolitan Police Department.
Defendant Redmon is scheduled for a change of plea hearing on May 23, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. and Defendant Kauka is scheduled to be sentenced on August 18, 2008 at 11:00 p.m., both in Louisville, Kentucky before Chief Judge John G. Heyburn, II.
