FORMER MADISONVILLE POLICE OFFICER CHARGED WITH STEALING FIREARMS FROM EVIDENCE LOCKER
– Joint investigation by ATF and Kentucky State Police
– Stole approximately 85 firearms
OWENSBORO, KY - An Information was filed by the United States Attorney on April 21, 2008, charging Brian McKinney, age 37, of Farmington, New Mexico, with stealing firearms which had been transported in interstate commerce, U.S. Attorney David L. Huber of the Western District of Kentucky, and Paul Vido, Special Agent in Charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Louisville Field Division, jointly announced today.
The Information alleges that between May 1, 2005, and January 18, 2007, in the Western District of Kentucky, Hopkins County, Kentucky, McKinney, stole approximately 85 firearms which had moved in interstate commerce. During this period, McKinney was the evidence custodian for the Madisonville Police Department. He was suspended from duty when an audit revealed the missing firearms, and is no longer employed by the police department.
In the event of a conviction, the maximum potential penalties are ten years imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, and supervised release for a period of three years.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Larry Fentress. The Bowling Green Field Office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) conducted the investigation in partnership with the Kentucky State Police, as part of ATFs mandated mission to reduce violent crime and other threats to public safety.
McKinney is scheduled to appear for arraignment/change of plea before the United States Magistrate Judge on May 15, 2008, at 9:30 a.m., in Owensboro, Kentucky.
