HARDIN COUNTY MAN SENTENCED FOR POSSESSION OF FIREARM AND AMMUNITION
– Porter has prior felony sexual assault convictions

LOUISVILLE, KY - Charles E. Porter, age 52, of Eastview, Kentucky, was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment to be followed by 5 years’ supervised release for being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, Candace G. Hill, Acting United States Attorney for the Western District of Kentucky, and Paul Vido, Special Agent in Charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Louisville Field Division, jointly announced today. There is no parole in the Federal Judicial system.

Porter previously admitted that on September 6, 2007, he possessed a Lorcin, Model L380, .380 caliber pistol, bearing serial number 114361, 24 rounds of .380 caliber ammunition, 2 rounds of 7 mm caliber ammunition, and 37 rounds of .22 caliber ammunition. Porter further admitted that at the time he possessed the firearm and ammunition, he had previously been convicted of 5 counts of 1st Degree Sexual Abuse and 2 counts of 3rd Degree Sodomy in Jefferson County Circuit Court on April 25, 2002. Porter also admitted that he had previously been convicted in a separate case of 3 counts of 3rd Degree Sodomy in Jefferson County Circuit Court also on April 25, 2002.

This is a Project Backfire prosecution. Project Backfire is a cooperative effort by the Jefferson County Attorney’s Office, the Jefferson County Commonwealth’s Attorneys Office, the Louisville Metro Police Department, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the United States Attorney’s Office to ensure that firearm offenses are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the state and federal law.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Michael A. Bennett. The Louisville Office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) conducted the investigation in partnership with the Hardin County Sheriff’s Office, as part of ATF’s ongoing commitment to reduce violent crime and other threats to public safety.
