MARSHALL COUNTY DRUG DEALER SENTENCED TO 11 YEARS AND 3 MONTHS FOR METHAMPHETAMINE CONSPIRACY AND DISTRIBUTION CHARGES
PADUCAH, KY - Carolyn Jean Craven, age 40, of Benton, Kentucky in Marshall County, was sentenced to 11 years’ and 3 months’ imprisonment in United States District Court, Paducah, Kentucky, for conspiracy with intent to distribute and distribution of methamphetamine, Acting U.S. Attorney Candace G. Hill of the Western District of Kentucky announced today. Thomas B. Russell, Chief Judge, United States District Court, also sentenced Craven to 5 years’ supervised release following incarceration. There is no parole in the federal judicial system.
Craven pled guilty on November 20, 2008 to the following:
In December, 2006, Kentucky State Police contacted DEA and requested assistance with the investigation of Carolyn Craven who was selling methamphetamine in Benton, Marshall County, Kentucky. A confidential informant (CI) made a controlled $1,600 purchase for an ounce of methamphetamine from Craven on December 22, 2006.
In January, 2007, an individual working as a CI advised law enforcement that Craven was expecting a shipment of methamphetamine through the mail. The CI stated that Craven was expecting the package on January 10th and that they would be able to purchase at least 2 ounces once she received it. KSP intercepted the package at UPS and called for a K-9 unit which alerted to the package. A state search warrant was obtained and the package was opened. Inside were two bags of methamphetamine (lab results show the meth weighed 279 grams or 159 grams pure methamphetamine). The CI placed a recorded call to Craven who discussed that a hold had been placed on the package and that she had only lost one package in 7 years. The street value of these drugs were $27,900.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Michele Thielhorn, and it was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Kentucky State Police and the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department.
