In January 2004, she became First Assistant to then-United States Attorney David Huber.

She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Western Kentucky University, and during the course of her 9-year career as a high school language teacher, earned her Master of Arts degree from the University of Louisville. She entered law school and graduated in 1985 from the University of Louisville School of Law. She worked for three years in a large private law firm and clerked for three years for United States District Judge Charles R. Simpson, before becoming an Assistant United States Attorney.
