OWENSBORO MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO THEFT
– Embezzled over $43,000 from union organizations
OWENSBORO, KY - Ray Horton, age 48, of Henderson, Kentucky, pled guilty on October 2, 2009 to charges of embezzling funds from labor union organizations, United States Attorney Candace G. Hill of the Western District of Kentucky announced today.
Horton admitted that between April 2006 and September 2007, while employed by Steelworkers Local Union 08-9443 to represent the Union as the Rapid Response Coordinator, Horton embezzled $19,924 by making false claims for compensation to which he was not entitled. Horton also admitted committing mail fraud between September 2005 and November 2007 concerning funds he raised for a Workers Memorial in Henderson. Although the memorial was subsequently erected, Horton unlawfully kept approximately $23,000.
The maximum potential penalties are 25 years’ imprisonment, a $500,000 fine, and supervised release for a period of 5 years.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney James H. Barr and it was investigated by the United States Department of Labor.
The plea was entered before Joseph H. McKinley Jr., Judge, United States District Court, Owensboro, Kentucky.
Horton is scheduled to be sentenced before Judge McKinley on January 6, 2010, at 9:00 a.m., in Owensboro, Kentucky.
