Corey Pittman, former Lutcher Police Chief, Sentenced

March 29, 2006

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA - Jim Letten , United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Louisiana, announced that COREY PITTMAN, the former Police Chief of Lutcher, Louisiana, was sentenced today by United States District Court Judge Helen G. Berrigan to ninety-two (92) months imprisonment and a term of three (3) years of supervised release following incarceration. PITTMAN, age 30, of Lutcher, Louisiana, received this sentence following his pleading guilty to three counts of distribution of 56.1 grams of cocaine base (“crack”) on December 21, 2005.

Acting swiftly on information and evidence, as a result of an undercover operation by Special Agent of DEA and FBI, and assisted by officers of the St. James Parish Sheriff’s Office, then-Lutcher Police Chief COREY PITTMAN was observed and captured distributing “crack” cocaine to an undercover operative on three occasions beginning on June 23, 2005 and culminating on August 12, 2005.

Speaking to today’s seven year prison sentence of the convicted former police chief, United States Attorney Jim Letten stated:

“The conviction and today’s prison sentence of former Police Chief PITTMAN - an admitted crack cocaine dealer - will serve as yet another strong signal to the citizens we in federal law enforcement serve, that we will tolerate no abuses or betrayals by officials who are sworn to protect and serve the public. More importantly, it will serve as a clear and unambiguous message to any and all public servants - and especially law enforcement officials - that no violations of law by our public officials will be tolerated inasmuch as the vast overwhelming majority of law enforcement professionals are profoundly honorable, highly committed men and women dedicated to protecting both the honor of the profession and the people we serve. My special thanks go out to the extraordinary men and women of the Drug Enforcement Administration, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and our partners in the St. James Parish Sheriff’s Office, who rescued the people of Lutcher, Louisiana from a drug dealer who had masqueraded as their police chief.”

The investigation was led by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Federal Bureau of Investigation with the cooperation of the St. James Parish Sheriff’s Office. The prosecution was led by Assistant United States Attorneys Albert J. Winters, Jr. and William J. Quinlan, Jr.
