CENTRAL CITY DRUG DEALER
PLEADS GUILTY IN FEDERAL COURT
TO DRUG AND FIREARMS VIOLATIONS

June 21, 2007

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CARNELL MEREDITH, aka “Pops”, a 26 year old resident of New Orleans, pled guilty in federal court to a three count indictment charging him with possession with the intent to distribute crack cocaine, possession of a firearm in furtherance of his drug trafficking crime, and being a felon in possession of a firearm stemming from an arrest on April 25, 2006, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten.

According to court documents, MEREDITH was observed by New Orleans Police Officers conducting a drug deal. When MEREDITH saw the officers, he attempted to flee and discard a 40 caliber firearm. After he was apprehended, officers located the gun in an alley and recovered approximately 12 grams of crack cocaine in his shoe and approximately $1,000.00 dollars in his pocket.

Further investigation revealed that in September, 2003, MEREDITH was convicted of felony drug charges in Orleans Parish.

Based on MEREDITH’s past criminal record and the facts of this case, he faces a mandatory minimum sentence of ten (10) years and a maximum sentence of life for the drug violations. He also faces a mandatory minimum sentence of five (5) years and a maximum of life in prison for the firearms violation. This sentence must be served consecutively to the sentence for the drug violation. In short, MEREDITH faces a sentence of fifteen (15) years to life in federal custody.

Praising the teamwork of NOPD and ATF, Letten stated,

“This is a great example of the tremendous results that are achieved when local and federal law enforcement officers cooperate and work together.”

This case was investigated by Special Agents of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, Drug Enforcement Administration, and members of the New Orleans Police Department.

This case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Maurice E. Landrieu, Jr.
