TANGIPAHOA PARISH JAILER PLEADS GUILTY TO FEDERAL DRUG CHARGES

June 27, 2007

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

HARRIS ROBERTSON, age 31 of Kentwood, Louisiana, pled guilty today in federal court to possession with the intent to distribute five grams or more of cocaine base (crack), announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten. Sentencing has been scheduled for October 3, 2007.

According to court documents, cooperating individuals informed law enforcement that ROBERTSON was smuggling contraband such as marijuana, alcohol, cellular telephones, and crack cocaine into the jail. Based on this information, DEA Special Agents and members of the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Department set up a sting operation, wherein an undercover officer posed as an inmate’s family member who was trying to get contraband into the jail. During a meeting, the undercover officer gave ROBERTSON alcohol, some bottled water, and fifteen (15) grams of crack cocaine to bring to an inmate. ROBERTSON agreed to do this and charged the undercover officer $300.00. Shortly thereafter ROBERTSON was arrested.

ROBERTSON faces a minimum term of imprisonment of five (5) years and a maximum term of imprisonment of forty (40) years, a fine of up to $2,000,000 and four (4) years of supervised release following any term of imprisonment.

The case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Department. The prosecution has been handled by Assistant U. S. Attorney Maurice Landrieu.
