UNITED POSTAL SERVICE LETTER CARRIER INDICTED FOR DISCARDING MAIL

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NATHAN WILLIAMS, age 31, a resident
of Kenner, was charged in a one-count indictment by a Federal Grand Jury for delay or destruction of mail, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten.
According to court documents, on January 29, 2007, NATHAN WILLIAMS, a United States Postal Service Letter Carrier, unlawfully detained, delayed, secreted and destroyed approximately 985 pieces of mail entrusted to him and which were intended to be conveyed by the United States Mail. If convicted, WILLIAMS faces a maximum term of imprisonment of five (5) years, a fine of $250,000 and three (3) years of supervised release following any term of imprisonment.
U. S. Attorney Letten reiterated that the indictment is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
The case was investigated by the United States Postal Service-Office of Inspector General. The prosecution is being handled by Assistant U. S. Attorney Andre’ Jones.
