ALIEN PLEADS GUILTY TO ILLEGAL ENTRY

FRANKLIN OMAR CRUZ-VELASQUEZ, age 25, a resident of Honduras, pled guilty yesterday before U. S. District Judge Mary Ann Vial Lemmon to one count of illegal re-entry of a deported alien, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten.
According to court documents, on September 4, 2007, Special Agents with the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement found FRANKLIN OMAR CRUZ-VELASQUEZ, an alien who had previously been removed and deported from the United States, in Orleans Parish Prison. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that CRUZ-VELASQUEZ was unlawfully in the United States without have applied to the Attorney General of the United States or his designated successor, the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security for re-admission to the United States.
Judge Lemmon scheduled a sentencing hearing for March 5, 2008. FRANKLIN OMAR CRUZ-VELASQUEZ faces a maximum term of imprisonment of two (2) years and a fine of $250,000 and up to three (3) years of supervised release.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The prosecution is being handled by Assistant U. S. Attorney W. Scott Laragy.
