NEW ORLEANS MAN SENTENCED TO 15 MONTHS IN FEDERAL PRISON FOR GUN VIOLATIONS

ONIS WILSON, age 28, a resident of New Orleans, Louisiana was sentenced by U. S. District Judge Stanwood R. Duval to fifteen (15) months of confinement for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon, announced U. S Attorney Jim Letten. In addition to the term of confinement, Judge Duval imposed 3 years of supervised release following the term of confinement, during which time the defendant will be under federal supervision and risks an additional term of confinement should he violate any terms of his supervised release.
According to court documents, on January 29, 2005, WILSON was stopped by the New Orleans Police Department for a traffic violation. When the officers approached the vehicle, WILSON opened the door and the officers noticed a handgun in the side compartment of the door. Upon further investigation by the officers, they discovered that on May 17, 1999, WILSON had been convicted in Orleans Parish Criminal District Court for felony possession of marijuana, second offense. Based on this conviction WILSON was prohibited by Federal Law from possessing a firearm.
After sentencing, WILSON was remanded to the custody of the United States Marshal’s Service to begin his term of imprisonment.
This case was investigated by Special Agents of the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives along with officers of the New Orleans Police Department. The prosecution is being handled by Assistant United States Attorney Juan M. Masini.
