April 29, 2008

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DERRICK K. AMBO, age 28, of New Orleans, pleaded guilty today before U.S. District Judge Jay C. Zainey to possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, announced U.S. Attorney Jim Letten.

According to court documents, on September 4, 2007, an arrest warrant was issued for AMBO based upon allegations of abuse made by his wife. On January 15, 2008, pursuant to the arrest warrant, Deputy U. S. Marshals assigned to the Crescent Star Fugitive Task Force located and apprehended AMBO at a residence located on Shubert Street in New Orleans pursuant to the above-mentioned arrest warrant.

After AMBO was apprehended, a search was conducted and a loaded .38 caliber pistol was recovered from under the mattress in room where AMBO was apprehended. Further investigation revealed that AMBO has previous felony convictions in Orleans Parish on November 15, 2004, for possession of cocaine; on October 5, 1999, for simple kidnaping and simple robbery; and on June 23, 1997, for possession with intent to distribute marijuana.

AMBO was indicted on the gun charge by a Federal Grand Jury on February 28, 2008. He now faces a maximum term of imprisonment of ten (10) years, a maximum fine of $250,000, and up to three (3) years of supervised release following any term of imprisonment. AMBO’s sentencing is scheduled for July 29, 2008 at 10:00 A.M.

This case was investigated by the U. S. Marshal’s Crescent Star Fugitive Task Force. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U. S. Attorney Christopher Cox of the Violent Crime Unit.
