ORLEANS PARISH MAN PLEADS GUILTY IN FEDERAL COURT TO GUN CHARGES

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
LEONARDO JOHNSON, age 18, a resident of New Orleans, Louisiana, pled guilty in federal court to a federal felony relating to being a previously convicted felon in possession of a firearm, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten today.
JOHNSON pled guilty before U. S. District Judge Ivan L.R. Lemelle to a violation of the Federal Gun Control Act. The charge carries a maximum sentence of at least ten (10) years, a $250,000.00 fine, forfeiture of the weapon and three (3) years of federal supervision after the completion of a prison sentence..
According to documents filed in federal court, JOHNSON, who previously was convicted for Possession of Cocaine in the Orleans Parish Criminal District Court in 2007, unlawfully possessed a North American Arms, .22 Magnum Revolver, on February 15, 2008. Under federal law, Letten explained, “Anyone who is convicted of a felony is prohibited from possessing any firearm or ammunition.”
JOHNSON was indicted by a federal grand jury on April 3, 2008 and will be sentenced on January 21, 2009.
This case was investigated by Special Agents of the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives along with the New Orleans Police Department and was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Abram McGull, II and Edward J. Rivera of the Violent Crime Unit.
