FORMER NAVY EMPLOYEE SENTENCED TO THREE MONTHS INCARCERATION FOR IDENTITY THEFT

November 12, 2008

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MARKHAM E. TURNER, age 38, a resident of Fort Worth, Texas, was sentenced by U. S. District Judge Ginger Berrigan to three (3) months incarceration for one count of identity theft, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten today. In addition to the term of imprisonment, Judge Berrigan imposed three (3) years of supervised release following the term of imprisonment, a $2,000 fine, $300 restitution for the victim and a $100 special assessment.

According to court documents, TURNER, a former civilian employee of the Naval Personnel Transportation Office at the Naval Support Activity in New Orleans, was charged with opening credit accounts and purchasing an automobile utilizing the identity of a Naval Reservist with a similar name. The victim, a police officer, lives in Littleton, Co. TURNER admitted that in February, 2004, he had used the victim’s social security number and partial address to fraudulently purchase a new 2004 Ford F-150 pick up truck valued at $26,870.00 from Bohn Ford..

Judge Berrigan took into consideration that the victim was a Navy reservist and, although TURNER was eligible for probation, imposed jail time. TURNER was indicted by a federal grand jury in May, 2008 and pled guilty on August 6, 2008.

This case was investigated by Special Agents of the United States Secret Service along with agents from the Navy Criminal Investigative Service. This case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Julia K. Evans.
