December 17, 2008

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BYRON GEORGE FREAS, age 21, a resident of Destrehan, LA, was sentenced today in federal court by U. S. District Judge Kurt D. Engelhardt to seven (7) months imprisonment in federal court for making a false bomb threat, announced U.S. Attorney Jim Letten. Additionally, FREAS was also placed on supervised release for three (3) years and was ordered to undergo mental health treatment and counseling during his period of supervised release.

According to court documents, FREAS pled guilty on September 24, 2008 to one count of maliciously conveying a false threat to destroy the NASA Michoud Assembly Plant by means of an explosive. FREAS, who had previously worked at the facility as a security guard, conveyed a threat that he had planted explosives in the facility. FREAS was interviewed by FBI agents concerning the threat and admitted his actions because he was upset over his dismissal from the facility.

This case was investigated by Special Agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation along with Special Agents of the NASA Inspector General’s Office. This case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Greg Kennedy.
