FORMER POSTAL SERVICE EMPLOYEE PLEADS GUILTY TO THEFT OF MAIL MATTER

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WILLIAM E. BOONE, age 53, a resident of Slidell, Louisiana, pled guilty in federal court yesterday before U. S. District Judge Ivan L. R. Lemelle to one count of a theft of mail matter by a Postal Service employee, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten.
According to the factual basis, BOONE admitted on May 22, 2008, while employed as a full-time custodian for the United States Postal Service, he stole a package containing a cell phone and charger out of the mail worth $585.00. The defendant faces a possible maximum sentence of five (5) years imprisonment, a fine of $250,000, and three years supervised release. Sentencing has been scheduled for August 12, 2009 at 2:00 P.M.
The case was investigated by agents of the United States Postal Inspection Service, Office of the Inspector General and is being prosecuted by Assistant U. S. Attorney Irene González.
